Plot to assasinate Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

The news is hot about the plot to assassinate Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA).

It is alleged that the “Al Qaida was involved on this with the plan to bomb foreign embassies”.

Military chief of staff Gen. Hermogenes Esperon said the assassination plot allegedly was hatched by the extremist Abu Sayyaf group and its Indonesia-based ally, Jemaah Islamiyah.

Prospero Nograles is the New House Speaker

Davao City Representative Prospero Nograles is now the new House Speaker of the Philippines. Prospero Nograles has been elected as the new speaker of the House of Representatives early Tuesday morning after Jose de Venecia has been ousted.

Nograles was nominated on the floor by de Venecia as his replacement. Cebu City Representative Antonio Cuenco on the other hand immediately closed the nomination for speaker, prompting Majority Leader Arthur Defensor to declare as “unanimous” the election of Nograles as speaker of the 240-member House.

Jose de Venecia was Ousted as House Speaker

The House of Representatives has reached a majority vote needed to oust Jose de Venecia Jr. Jose de Venecia Jr. has held his position as Speaker of House of Representatives for five consecutive three-year terms.

A total of 174 lawmakers voted to have the Speaker JDV seat vacated, 35 voted for De Venecia to stay as Speaker of the 14th Congress, while 16 other members of the House of Representatives abstained from voting.
